Amazon, the largest employer in the Greater San Marcos, has begun construction on what will be the largest industrial facility in San Marcos and the two-county footprint of Hays and Caldwell County.

The Amazon SAT-6 facility is being constructed on 70 acres at the Whisper development (1346 Fortuna Road, located near Yarrington Road) and will exceed one million total square feet upon completion. It will provide last-mile delivery services for large items, such as furniture, televisions and outdoor equipment. Construction on the site has already begun and Amazon anticipates opening the site by the end of 2021.

“With over 5,000 employees and three facilities in the Greater San Marcos region, Amazon is our region’s largest employer,” said Jason Giulietti, president of Greater San Marcos Partnership. “The new last mile facility is a testament to Amazon’s confidence in the quality of our workforce and their attraction to the growth taking place in the heart of the Texas Innovation Corridor. The size and magnitude of this facility continues the momentum we’ve been experiencing with the large number of prospects and announcements. The activity is exceeding all expectation.”

The new facility will create hundreds of full- and part-time positions with an industry-leading $15 per hour starting wage. Full-time employees receive comprehensive benefits including full medical, vision, and dental insurance as well as a 401(k) with 50 percent match starting on day one. The company also offers up to 20 weeks of maternal and parental paid leave, plus innovative benefits such as Leave Share and Ramp Back, which give new parents flexibility with their growing families.

The delivery station is the fourth Amazon facility in the regional footprint, joining an 855,000 square foot SAT-2 facility in San Marcos, a sorting facility in Kyle and a distribution facility in Buda. Amazon is now the region’s largest employer with over 5,000 employees.

Amazon is part of a growing trend in the Greater San Marcos region, which now features more than 250 supply chain-related businesses, employing thousands in Hays and Caldwell Counties. Earlier this fiscal year, Lowe’s announced a 120,000+ square foot distribution facility for Lowe’s in Kyle, and another industry-related company will occupy 200,000+ square foot facility at the Hays Commerce Center. Additional spec spaces by Bearden Investments and Northpoint Development were also announced in the last six months, which will provide added opportunities for job and business growth.

“San Marcos is extremely excited to have been chosen to have another Amazon facility be built in our community,” said Jane Hughson, mayor of San Marcos.  “We have the workforce and the community support to continue to be a strong and viable partner with the Amazon organization.  Welcome again to San Marcos!”

Hiring at the new SAT-6 facility will begin approximately 8 weeks prior to the launch of the facility. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or the equivalent.
