Hello Team GSMP: Chris Duran

Chris Duran has been Team GSMP's Research Analyst since Spring 2016. In that time, he's been a key team member within RFI responses, out-of-market recruitment trip preparations, public relations efforts, and more! Chris is a two-time Texas State University Bobcat, earning both his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University. An Austin native, Chris can usually be found mining data and drinking coffee here at the GSMP office. In his free time, Chris is an active volunteer for many causes and has had a big impact on his community.

What do you like most about your job?

CD: At the end of the day, I love that the work that my team and I do every day ultimately contributes to the betterment of our community and region here in Greater San Marcos. It means a lot to me to be a part of something that is making a meaningful difference in the lives of my neighbors and, being a student of economics, it’s an amazing thing to be able to do so by working to advance our regional economy. Furthermore, I’d be remiss to fail to mention how grateful I am to have the privilege to work alongside such a talented and professional team in doing the important work that we do. The caliber of the team we have here at GSMP and the quality of the people is what I believe is essential to our success and our ability to realize the goals of the organization that make me so proud to work here.

What does a typical day look like for you?

CD: This question touches on another part of my job that I love – it feels like I hardly have a typical day! We do so much here at GMSP. Thus, being research/data support to our team means that the scope of research/data that I work with ends up being remarkably far-ranging and diverse. All the while, I’m always working to synthesize everything I’m seeing and learning, being that so much of the research and data that I aggregate, analyze, make sense of, and provide to our team or other individuals is largely interconnected. While you can usually find me back in my office pulling data, generating reports, updating spreadsheets, etc., the specific tasks I’m doing and the area of research, data and subject matter that I’m working with will really vary greatly from day to day.

What three words would you use to describe your role?

CD: Data, data and data! Just kidding. Although that could probably work. A better answer is probably research, data, and economic analyst.

What is your motto or personal mantra?

CD: “Make a little bit of good every single day.”

What is your favorite line from a film?

CD: I’m going to bend the question a bit and share the very last line from my favorite show of all time.

“There’s a lot of beauty in ordinary things. Isn’t that kind of the point?” – Pam Halpert, The Office.
