Hello Team GSMP: Ashley Gossen
For April, we’re talking to Ashley Gossen, GSMP’s Director of Communications & Community Engagement. Ashley is an economic developer who passionately loves and promotes the Austin-San Antonio area. Prior to joining Team GSMP, Ashley got her start in the Econ Dev industry as the Media Director at the Austin Chamber.
Born in Little Rock, AR, Ashley is a Razorback by blood and Texas Longhorn by trade and heart. She moved to Austin, TX, over a decade ago where she completed high school and college. Ashley is a proud military spouse and the mother of a spirited two-year-old daughter and three fur babies.
What do you like most about your job?
AG: From a day-to-day standpoint, I enjoy that no day is the same. There is no playbook on economic development marketing, so every day is an opportunity to learn and try new strategies. I also love when we find something is really working and we get to really dive deeper into making it better, like our events. Big picture – the first time I met someone who was working at an employer that our team helped recruit and heard how that job impacted her life, I was sold on the Econ Dev industry.
What three words would you use to describe your role?
AG: Cheerleader, Skeptic, Wordsmith
What advice would you give to aspiring economic developers?
AG: Get involved early and often, which will help you build your network and your resume while bolstering your confidence and new ideas. Travel, even if just for the day, which will help you see different settings and how other communities operate. Listen – professionals who have been in this industry have the experiences that would be written in that non-existent Econ Dev playbook and you can learn from them.
